Stepping Towards A Higher Education

Every year since 2013, the Urban Heat Academy gives the biggest step show on the west coast. This time the 5th annual Youth step show conference will be no different.

On Saturday, February 24th, 2018 at Oakland Technical High School the Urban Heat Academy is hosting a “Best of The Bay,” step show and youth conference. Middle and High school teams from all throughout the US will come and compete on stage for a grand prize of $1,000. Along with a live DJ and over a thousand-people expected to be in attendance.

The Urban Heat Academy is an after- school enrichment program that inspires youth to start thinking about a college education by focusing on academics, building self-esteem while minimizing violence. The program ensures students are on track to taking the necessary steps toward a rewarding collegiate career. The Urban Heat Academy serves students in grades K-12 with locations in Vallejo, Stockton and Oakland, California.

Kino Carson, started the Urban Heat Academy to change the way children viewed education. He wanted to give back to the community in ways that it has given him ways to be successful in his own life. He played football in high school. He has been a part of the Boys & Girls Club, as well as a teacher and administrator in Sacramento. Now he is a high school principal in the Oakland unified school district.

“I just want to change the lives of people in the community,” Carson says.

“Being a product of Oakland, CA., I believe that change starts at the top. I am concerned that too many of our young men and women have been falling through the cracks. Urban Heat Academy is designed to inspire our youth to further their education and be the best they can be in society.”

Carson feels as parents we must do more to motivate and protect our children’s most powerful weapon; their future.

“Kids will do what they see, not what you say. Growing up, kids, mostly males hear, ‘Hey, you play ball (football or basketball)?’ But what about those who don’t do neither? The stigma is different,” Carson adds.

He feels we need to be more involved with our children to prevent them from spending overly amounts on social media and more focus on education.

“We provide an outlet that’s fun and exciting with activities that brings in real-life experiences. Things you expose children to can affect their environment. We expose them to more. We make getting an education fun.”

This is also the first time the academy is offering a summer academic enrichment program. The program will consist of field trips, free lunches, and t-shirts. The school will start at 8:15am-2pm at Lafayette Education Elementary from June 8th -July 12th for grades (1-6). Along with a concentration in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Arts, Health and more. The price is $200.00 per student. For more information please visit

2018 A Happy New Year

By Karisma Romea

happy new year“Happy new year!” – I bet this is the most common phrase we hear today or the easiest greeting we can utter when we meet an old friend along the way. But, is it really a happy new year for you or is it just a make believe?

How did you await for 2018? Did you wear your favourite polka dress? Did you had a complete set of twelve round fruits on your table? Did you blow a horn? Did you watch a fireworks display? How did you celebrate the New Year to make it a really happy one indeed?

The last year 2017 seemed to have flew by so fast that we are now facing the first month of 2018. Who would have thought we will all still be grinding for this year? What’s the difference between 2017 and 2018? They say it’s a New Year then so what?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately on how can I make this year a better one or, the best one so far? How can this year be different? I wonder what will be my plot twist for my brand new 365 – day journey. As I ponder on this little mind-boggling puzzle, I came up with three ways to make this new annum a happy new year, indeed!

First is to put God at the centre of everything. Make God your core and let everything you do be wired unto Him. Remember, God without man is still God but a man without God is nothing. You don’t want to be just nothing this year, do you? Now, you know what to do! First thing’s first. Choose to be someone in His eyes, not in the eyes of anyone else. Make Him your priority above anything else.

Second, know your lifeline and by this I mean your circle, your family. Know your bloodline by heart. You may get to choose your friends but never your family. People may come and go but a family will always be family. Remember, the blood running in your veins right now is the same blood running in the veins of your parents and siblings. Whether you like it or not, you will always be a part of each other wherever, whenever.

Lastly, love yourself a little more. Stop being hard on yourself. Give yourself a break because you deserve it. Follow what you truly love. Pursue your dreams. Hold on to your faith. Take yourself on a higher challenge that you are capable of. You don’t deserve mediocrity. Be brave to aim for the stars. But, give yourself a room for adjustments and mistakes. Do not hate yourself for plans that do not go as they are. Remember, nobody else will love you better than yourself (God is an exemption for this, of course!).

This 2018, make this year your year! Claim it. Declare it. Live by it. You are going to conquer greater feats. You are going to win against tougher battles. You are going to be victorious this year! It’s just a matter of mind-setting and prioritizing. And it will always start within YOU! Yes, you! You are the key to your own door.

Choose to have a better year this year.

Happy New Year!

Stay Woke, Black Lives Still Matter

Don’t be fooled by the propaganda as of late that has broadcasts through our airwaves. Just a year ago we were chanting,”Black Lives Matter.” Now they have us quiet because everyone is so concerned with sexual harassment in Hollywood. But let us not forget the lives lost of our fellow brothers and sisters. Just because it is not reported doesn’t mean it isn’t still happening. There are too many of us dying at the hands of corrupt officers. More and more each day, it is so easy to forget when the news won’t report it. Not to take anything away from those impacted by sexual harrssment. But we must stay diligent and remember that we must still fight to be heard.

Baltimore Uprising is a documentary that was just released this month in November 2017 about the riots that occurred over the death of Freddie Gray. There wasn’t a lot of media coverage for this but it was directed by Sonja Sohn, an actress from the hit TV show The Wire.

Never forget, But always forgive.

New York Offers Free Tuition at Four-Year Universities.

few New York families may have rejoiced in the fact of knowing they will not be paying a high tuition bill this fall semester. The state of New York has become the first state to offer free tuition for public four -year universities. It is a part of an Excelsior Scholarship Program that offers free tuition for low – income families making less than $100,000 a year. Which will increase to $110,00 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019. The requirements for the students are that they must be residents and enrolled full-time and maintain their GPA to maintain the scholarship. It works the same as if filling out a FAFSA.

This is a step in the right direction as it lowers debt cost and need for loans. Although, it won’t cover housing and other things such as textbooks. It is certainly helping those who dream to go to college into a much realized reality.
