The Weeknd boycotts Grammys after nomination snub.
The Grammys may just be just a couple days away and artists are rehearsing their performances. However, there are some artists who are fed up with the way the nominations are going. Canadian artist The Weeknd scored a huge hit with his song, “Blinding Lights, for his After Hours album. He also performed during the Super Bowl halftime show. Which is a huge effort for any artist. Yet he was shut out in this year’s Grammy award show.
The Weeknd whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, states in an interview with The New York Times that he is boycotting the award show now going forward. “Because of the secret committee,” he says. “I will no longer allow my label to submit music to The Grammys.”
The issue with the Grammys come from its unfair voting decisions. The show is suppose to be a true art form for artists, performers, and producers to showcase their talents. Recently, now it seems there has been more pressure to reward success rather than talent.
Harvey Mason Jr is a producer, songwriter as well as an interim chief executive for The Grammys states in response to The Weeknd’s refusal to deal with The Grammys.
“We’re all disappointed when someone is upset,” Mason says. “But I will say that we are constantly evolving. And this year, as in past years, we are going to take a hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”
The Weeknd tweeted his frustrations online and says, “We did everything right, I think. I’m not a cocky person. I’m not arrogant. People told me I would get nominated.” He told Billboard in an interview. “Like, ‘This is your year. We were all very confused.”
Now he joins the list of artist who have publicly spoken out about the award show, such as Frank Ocean, Jay-Z , Drake and Kanye West. The Weeknd has won three Grammy awards for his R&B performance for Earned It back in 2016, as well as in 2016 Urban Contemporary Album for Beauty Behind The Madness. In 2018 he won Urban Contemporary Album for Starboy. But now Abel says, all three of those awards ‘mean nothing to me now.”
