Jesse Williams Inspires at the BET Awards
If his dreamy eyes didn’t capture you already, then his heartfelt words at 2016’s BET Awards sure will! Jesse Williams, actor, received the 2016 BET Humanitarian Award, and it was beyond well deserved.
Jesse Williams has been a passionate and powerful activist for human rights. His name in lights didn’t stray him away from his firm roots and beliefs, but provided him with a higher platform to do his part in changing the lives of African Americans. His profound speech at the awards shined light on the struggles, brutality, and unlawful acts the Black Community faces daily. It pulled the audience out of their seats with tears rolling down their faces. Williams isn’t going to stop until America practices what it preaches.
“Now, this award – this is not for me. This is for the real organizers all over the country – the activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do” Jesse explains.
Williams continued to preach about and for his fellow community. His motivational speech truly motivated the audience flourishing the room with applause and positive drive to fight for their rights.
He continued, “Yesterday would have been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday so I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on a 12 year old playing alone in the park in broad daylight, killing him on television and then going home to make a sandwich”.
Not only did his words captivate the hearts in the Microsoft Theatre, but it touched many hearts on the outside of the television with hope and inspiration.
Unfortunately, for others his speech left a bitter taste in their mouth. A petition from those on the opposite side is going around to get Jesse Williams terminated from the show “Grey’s Anatomy” because of his, supposedly, “hate speech”.
Petitioners can sit down, and Jesse Williams could rest easy as the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, recognizes the ridiculousness of the petition and tweeted, “Um, people? Boo don’t need a petition. #shondalandrules”.
