Whitney: Story of An America Icon
On Saturday evening at 8pm on Lifetime Network, Actress Angela Bassett made her directorial debut with the biopic life story of American Icon, Whitney Houston. The long awaited film did come with some heated controversy. Several critics were saying this film was made without permission of Houston’s family. But still it made it’s debut on primetime television.
The role of Whitney Houston was portrayed by Yaya Dacosta while Arlen Escarpeta played the role of her spouse Bobby Brown. The film captured Whitney at the height of her career, and how she started the tumultuous relationship with Brown. We see Houston take several uses of cocaine while not on stage. This film could have spent more time showing us how Whitney rose to fame instead Bassett chose to focus more on her relationship and personal life. Whitney somewhat unsure of herself became very dependent upon both Bobby and the drugs.
If you are curious to know more about the strained relationship of Houston and Brown then this film definitely sets the story straight. But if you are wondering more about Houston’s career you may have to wait until a film about her full life is brought to the big screen.
