Donald Glover: Writer, Comedian, Actor, Filmmaker, Rapper….The World

Donald Glover is a name a lot of people know. Nowadays, a lot of people know him by his rap name Childish Gambino. His track ‘3005’ is all over the airwaves and on top lists between fans and critics of the hip hop genre. He most recently called out fellow rappers Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Mac Miller, ASAP Rocky and Macklemore by saying he is the best rapper out and that he will ‘murder’ them which is a reference in the rap game to eating all the competition. But before he rose to the music charts and put out hit songs, let’s see where he started.

Donald Glover was born in 1983 to foster parents on Edwards Air Force Base where they raised him and he enjoyed their love. Glover was raised in Atlanta and New York, Glover attended many performing art schools in New York, majoring in writing and acting.

In 2006, he became a writer on the show 30 Rock which starred Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey and Tracey Morgan. Tina Fey loved his work as a writer and employed him as head writer for many episodes. This earned him a Writers Guild of America Award in 2009. He also made several appearances on the show as well. Around this same time, he released his first music album titled Sick Boi under his rap name Childish Gambino.

Donald is also a member of Derrick Comedy. Many of their sketches have been seen on YouTube which led to them going on tour performing their popular, un-orthodox sketches. This also led them to make a feature film Mystery Team which Glover wrote and created the music for. Glover also released two more mixtapes titled I Am Just A Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2.He continued putting out more songs and his style, flows and beats began to get him wide spread acclaim. He usually makes most of the beats and music for his albums, short films and music videos.

Glover also does stand-up comedy. A lot of his performances were seen on Comedy Central. Glover is also a writer and actor on the hit NBC comedy Community alongside Chevy Chase. His performance on the show garnered him critical acclaim even more. Glover has also been seen on the big screen in movies such as Mystery Team, The Muppets, The To Do List, Clapping for the Wrong Reasons and the upcoming adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. His album Because the Internet is receiving great reviews.

With all of this under his belt, a lot of people, not just African Americans can look at his career and know that they can do more than just one thing if he can write, rap, act, produce music, do stand up and model, anyone can do it. Just have to be strong and never give up.
